Sierra Services
for the Blind and Visually Impaired|
First consideration in the design of this Website has been given to visitors who use a Screen Reader—those who may be blind, have impaired vision, or for some other reason, use a reader. Equal consideration has been given to assist those with impaired vision by using a Bold Sans-Serif typeface throughout the Website. Words that may otherwise have been underlined, bolded, or Italicized are enlarged to the next size instead. Windows users with a properly functioning wheel mouse may enlarge or shrink the type size by holding down the control key and rotating the wheel. Both Word and WordPerfect provide greater enlargement than Windows. It is possible to copy and paste into one of these and take advantage of the greater enlargement available. This feature does not work in DOS. With few exceptions, all links to other pages on the Website are displayed at the top of each page in Navigation Bars, (rectangles) the width of the screen, approximately three eights of an inch high and divided by vertical bars into a number of cells. Generally the number of cells in a bar is limited to a total of eight. Where more options are offered, an additional bar is used beneath the preceding one. These secondary bars start with a blank cell. Users of Screen readers may hear the primary and secondary bars as one long bar. Navigation Bars may be easily found from anywhere on the page by pressing control+home. The number of bars displayed on each page is determined by the path followed to reach that page. All displayed bars are active, allowing shortcuts throughout the Site. The first cell of each bar contains the letter B, followed by a number indicating its sequence on the page, a space, then two letters indicting the currently selected path through each bar. Selecting ARCHITECT from the navigation bar above, on this page, provides information about the motivation for and development of this Website as well as other useful information. This Website contains many pages, some of which are awaiting individual volunteers to edit them. It has been designed to provide a large amount of information for individuals who are blind or visually impaired as well as others. Please email any suggestions as to how navigation throughout the Site might be improved to the Webmaster |
