TRANSPORTATION:
Our
clients need rides due to the lack of public transportation in our rural
community. The transportation we
provide includes:
Trips
to and from medical appointments as far as Sacramento
Assistance
with filling out medical forms
Taking
the client to have prescriptions filed
Rides
to and from all our meetings and events
TRAINING:
Education
and skills to remain in the home, including:
Independent
living skills
Orientation
and Mobility Training
Braille
lessons
Computer
training for the blind and visually impaired
COUNSELING:
We
provide peer and professional counseling to help those with newly limited
vision
to develop a positive attitude and to fight the depression, loneliness
and
isolation that accompany the loss of sight.
Twenty-two
peer group meeting occur each month
Staff
provided individual counseling over 1200 times last year
We
also provide counseling to the client's family.
SOCIAL GATHERINGS:
We
hold luncheons, picnics and dinners for our clients to meet new visually
impaired friends share daily problems, and retain a sense of
community. Transportation is
provided to all such events.
INFORMATION AND
REFERRAL:
Sierra
Services for the Blind will help the client obtain any needed resources,
equipment and low-vision assistance.
ADVOCACY:
Sierra
Services for the Blind will help clients with their blindness related legal
or bureaucratic issues with Social Security, Medicare or insurance
companies.
TALKING BOOK
APPLICATIONS AND SUPPORT:
We
can help you get talking books and recorders, including the downloading of
digital books from the National Library Service.
