SSB Logo Sierra Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired
offers full services, at no charge, to clients in the foothill communities of Nevada and Placer Counties and beyond.

 We help blind and visually impaired individuals stay in their homes and out of institutions.

All services are provided at no charge to clients.

Transportation

    Our clients need rides due to the lack of public transportation in our rural community. The Transportation we provide includes:

    • Trips to and from doctor appointments as far as Sacramento.
    • Assistance with filling out medical forms.
    • Taking the client to have prescriptions filled.
    • Rides to and from all our meetings and events.

    In the past year, Sierra Services for the Blind has provided over 2400 such client trips: 65% were provided by staff and 35% by volunteers.

Training
  • Education and skills to remain in the home, including:
    • Independent Living Skills.
    • Orientation and Mobility Training.
  • Braille lessons.
  • Computer training for the blind.
Counseling

    We provide peer and professional counseling to help those with newly limited vision to develop a positive attitude and to fight the depression, loneliness and isolation that accompany the loss of sight. We also provide counseling to the client’s family.

    • 22 peer group meetings occur each month.
    • Sierra Services gives two informational presentations per month at the Nevada County Senior Center.
    • Staff provided individual counseling 1200 times last year.
Social gatherings

    We hold luncheons, picnics, and dinners for our clients to meet new visually impaired friends, share daily problems, and retain a sense of community. Transportation is provided to all such events.

Information and referral

    Sierra Services will help the client obtain any needed resources, equipment and low-vision specialists.

Advocacy

    Sierra Services will help clients with their blindness-related legal or bureaucratic issues with Social Security, Medicare or insurance companies.

Talking book applications

    We can help you get talking books and recoders.
